European ME Clinicians Council Meetings
Building on the connections made at BRMEC15, the European ME Clinicians Council (EMECC) restarted its meetings and has now held three meetings since the colloquium and is continuing on a monthly basis - bringing together clinicians from across Europe, and now further afield, to discuss complex cases and share clinical practice.
The European ME Research Group (EMERG) is pleased to report on the progress of the
European ME Clinicians Council (EMECC), a forum for clinicians treating ME/CFS patients
that was established in 2018 and held several meetings in London prior to the pandemic.
In the wake of this year's Biomedical Research Colloquium (BRMEC15), the forum was restarted
and met after the IiMER International ME Conference Week held at Hinxton Hall, Wellcome Genome
Campus, in May 2026.
From BRMEC15 to a Standing Clinical Forum
BRMEC15 brought together ME researchers and clinicians from across Europe and beyond,
continuing the tradition of collaborative network-building that has underpinned EMERG
since its formation in 2015. In the margins of the colloquium, clinicians already active
in the informal European ME Clinical network identified a clear need: a regular,
dedicated forum where clinicians could bring complex cases to colleagues working on the
same disease across different health systems.
Those conversations led directly to the EMECC meetings resuming, the first being held on 3 June 2026, chaired by Dr Leonardo Tamariz from University of Miami. Invest in ME Research took on the administrative side of the council, handling invitations, scheduling and minutes, so that the clinical discussion itself could remain the focus.
Three Meetings In, and Growing
EMECC+ has now met three times:
- 3 June 2026 - the inaugural meeting, establishing the council and its chair
- 24 June 2026 - case presentations from Professor Kristian Sommerfelt and Dr Louise Gudbergsen
- 29 July 2026 - a detailed case presentation from Dr Leonardo Tamariz, alongside an update on the developing European treatment protocol
What began as a European clinical network has already begun to draw in participants from further afield, with clinicians from outside Europe now joining the discussion alongside their European colleagues - a reflection of how widely the need for this kind of forum is felt.
Looking Ahead
EMECC will continue to meet monthly, with the next meeting scheduled for September 2026. As the Clinicians Council grows, it continues to offer clinicians a space to bring difficult cases, compare approaches, and build a genuinely shared European - and increasingly international - clinical practice for ME/CFS.
